Laocoön and his two sons
One of my favorite sculptures inside the Vatican Museum. It was
one of the most famous Greek statues in ancient Rome (artist
unknown). Story of poor Laocoön: When the Greeks presented the
huge wooden horse to the people of Troy, the Trojan priest
Laocoön
was suspicious. "I fear the Greeks even when they bear gifts," he
said.
But the gods wanted the Greeks to win, so they sent two giant sea
snakes to the land, who headed straight towards Laocoön and his
two sons, and promptly crushed them to death. The Trojans saw this
as a sign that the gods were displeased that Laocoön was
spreading false rumors, so they happily took in the horse, and the
rest, as we know, is history.... |
